Irrelevant Interruption FTW
Umm... I read M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang this morning and on the train. Mind fucking BLOWN, guys. It's loosely based on this real French diplomat who was in China and had a major affair with a Chinese opera singer, who happened to be a Communist spy extorting him for information.

And a guy, which the French dude managed not to be aware of for about twenty years.

It's insanely good, and there's a lot about fantasy/reality, and love, and sex, and sexism, and racism, and colonialism.

I really want to see it performed one of these days. Maybe I'll check out the film.

I also really want to accuse everyone who writes L/Light of being an imperialist pig.

Including ME. >D

In other news, I found a new way to waste time last night.

...guilty as charged.

So here's mine:

And here's eltea's, which makes me lol every time I think about it:

...and yes. XD

Go here to make your own bizarre error messages to your heart's content. XD

M. Butterfly?? 8D I've seen Madame Butterfly which I believe Hwang got his inspiration from, but I haven't read his version. Sounds good though!

And lol, those error messages are awesome! XD

There's a lot of the opera in it, which apparently is even cooler if you've seen it, though the only operas I've seen are La Traviata and Carmen, sad panda. XD This is what happens when you go see them with your French class: you only see French ones. XD We got in cheap, though...! XD

Er, anyway, check it out if you get a chance; it's crazy-cool. :D

It was late. We were giggly. The usual! 8D

:D Sounds great! I'll definitely check it out the next time I'm in a bookstore. Although the chances of them having it in this little town is next to nil...Enter internet shopping please XD

Erm... to be frank, that diplomat must have been really, really terrible (and selfish!) in teh sack to have not noticed he was doing a guy. For twenty years. XD

I am reminded of Robot Chicken, when the nerdy kid won a date with Scarlett Johannson, and they wound up getting married and having kids. And when they were old, she revealed that she wasn't the real Scarlett, just a look-alike. And a guy.

And now that sketch has literary merit to me. Oh dear. XD

The guy's still alive. And apparently likes the play. You can read a bit about him in all his utter bizarreness here, if you like. :P

Ahahaha. XD That is why I need to watch more Robot Chicken. My brother and I saw a three-hour marathon at like two in the morning once, and it changed my life. XD

Literary merit is in more than I'd like; it's just a matter of looking at it funny. And then cringing when you ruin your entertainment with analysis. XD
Emma Daiouemmadaiou28 on March 8th, 2009 01:48 am (UTC)
Bahahaha, and now he is "living contentedly with a longtime male partner." That made me lol. A lot. XD

Aww, but analyzing is such great fun! Though I'll admit, I have a hard time watching/reading certain things without analyzing every moment.. Trigun, for instance. I still analyze the heck out of it, even years later. XP

Hey, as long as he's happy, I guess...! XD

It is indeed. XD I saw "King Kong" for the third time while on a plane, and I came up with a long list of reasons why the monkey was a Christ figure. XD

Oh, eee hee hee. XD So they talked a lot in the play about how the West casts itself as the aggressor and emasculates Asian men and assumes that The East, as it were, will be happy to submit when faced with a worthy (or even not particularly worthy) dominant Western party, and that the Western sexual fantasy about deferent "Oriental" woman is the same deal. SOOOO... L/Light. XD

Then again, L is almost a world character to me, rather than a Western character, but... everything comes back to fanfiction in my head, so that was my immediate thought.

I am THAT AMAZING. 8D

(P.S. YAY! ^^)

Heee, I... am just permanently slashily-minded. 8D

Yeah, I usually go British for him. ^^ And their relationship doesn't even speak of that to me, really, but it was, uh, the first connection my brain made when I put the play down. XD

Education schmeducation; it's all about looking at fic from new angles! XD
