A Poll for People Who Read the Stuff I Post on the Internet for Kicks
An anonymous poll (or not-anonymous, if you prefer that because you're too badass for anon) un-anon poll, because I can't figure out how to make it anon, so I'll just promise not to hold anything against you, where you can give me fanfiction feedback. Because. Why not?

I mostly just made this because the first question has been bugging me, so if you want to answer that and then leave, that's fine, too. XD

And obviously you don't have to give input on fandoms/characters you're not familiar with or don't care about. Though you're welcome to make random guesses if you really want. XD

Poll #1534410 "Fanfiction Feedback Fun" Abbreviates to "FFF"

Are my Merlin fics getting waaaay too formulaic?

Yes. Please just stop before you hurt yourself.

A little. You've used the find-a-monster-and-discover-Merlin's-magic plotline a few too many times.

Not really. You're still keeping it pretty fresh.

What the hell, woman; I don't have time to read your Merlin fics.

Yes. I can't really distinguish your fics anymore. When you actually write them.
0(0.0%)
A little. You're covering some of the same ground sometimes.

You should have had a colors of the rainbow option for what's your favorite color. Just a suggestion. XD

In all honesty though, you really should be working the most on original fiction when you can. You've done some really great things in the fandom and while you're prolific, if you could somehow harness that energy into an original fic of epic undertaking, you might find the Creative Writing Master's Program more appealing.

Vitamin C: Merlin - Free-Range Warlocktierfal on March 7th, 2010 03:00 am (UTC)
I was thinking of that... I was also thinking of throwing in things like "silver" and "fuchsia." XD

Yeah, I keep saying that to myself -- and then struggling a lot to come up with an idea I'd actually want to write about for the length of a novel. pulped_fictions lately has been really nice for getting me back into the spirit of original things, at least a little, so hopefully that'll start looking up...?

Haha, I was wondering what it would look like. I'm thinking very, very pale pink, with embedded glitter that gets all over whatever you're coloring. Then you can turn ANY stick figure into a sparkly vampire Adonis!! 8D

Oh my god, I think I’m seriously setting a record here; I’ve had to break this up into FOUR comments. XD I desperately need a facepalm icon (or just a “never shuts up” icon; this one will have to do for now), and I really hope that this is helpful. :P
Eltea: Treeeltea on March 6th, 2010 12:39 pm (UTC)
Part 1/4
(Elaboration - a.k.a. pssssh, comment-length, what do you mean you can’t handle three thousand words. Also, very important - I get the sense that what you really want here is constructive criticism, so that’s what I’ve tried to give. I could easily spend another three thousand words on nothing but praise, but praise isn’t always that helpful, so I’ve tried to pick out things to suggest for every question. Believe me, I love your writing to death, but I’ve tried to be nitpicky because that’s what it sounds like you want, while also trying to be constructive. ♥)

1. The Merlin one - Not really. They are, as you point out, occasionally a little formulaic in terms of plot, but it’s not too formulaic as long as each one is still fun to read, which they are. This is a difficult question to answer, because yes, some of your plots are a bit similar, but your writing itself is entertaining enough that I think you could write every fic about Merlin having breakfast and I’d still enjoy reading them.

2. The Death Note one - I had trouble picking between B and C, and eventually picked C, because I do believe that in general. (Actually, I shouldn’t be answering this question, because I haven’t read all of your DN stuff lately /slaps own hand, so be warned that this is just an impression.) It seems like the only times stuff approaches repetitive is, understandably, when you’re writing it because you’re supposed to (i.e. a present or something), rather than because you’ve just happened to have an idea. I also think we both had some of our best DN ideas back when we used to talk about and analyze it for hours on end, so if you want to write more and are worrying about fuel/inspiration, maybe we should have another academic discussion of it. :)

3. Okay, so for this next one, I actually went through your tags at tierfallen and refreshed my memory, and I will break it down character-by-character and underline my answers. XD (One thing I might suggest, if you ever have time, is adding character tags even when there’s a pairing. For instance, Foul Deeds was tagged Matt/Mello, but I’d definitely, definitely tag that one Matt as well, because it’s so much about him. After all, if you click the Matt tag, you probably want all the ones about Matt regardless of pairing, and right now there are only a few. And if you search for him by clicking the Matt/Mello tag, you have to sort through the ones that center on Mello.) Also, I really think you write everyone extremely well, so the ones I checked in the poll and am underlining here are the ones that just absolutely stab me through the heart with perfect - if someone isn’t underlined, I still probably think your characterization of them is excellent, and just wanted to pick my favorites rather than checking every single box and being unhelpful.

Matt: Matt is obviously difficult to say, because we get to little of him in canon. I like that you make him quiet and kind of innocent as a child - though as an adult (well, as his older self, which he probably doesn’t think of as an adult), it might not hurt to wrap that in a bit more of a shell of cynicism and profanity and toughness, because that’s what guys do to hide their hearts, and when older!Matt doesn’t he sometimes feels more like a child. Also, he occasionally says things outright in mental monologue that I think a guy his age would be more likely to hedge around or hint at, even in his own head. Keep the dorky moments, though, because those soften him and make him so lovable. ♥
Mello: Your Mello is excellent, especially when he’s crude and a little cruel on the outside. One of the things I noticed is that my favorite dialogue you’ve written for him is the stuff with sharp edges, so to speak, because poor Mello is such an angry little boy lashing out at the world before it can hurt him. He’s a bully, really, and I think the fact that Matt doesn’t hit back is what makes him so precious. Your Mello is best when he’s treating the reader as an enemy, too, rather than a confidant, and when the only point of view from which you don’t see a lot of insight into his character is his own.

I believe I'm about as useful as a chocolate teapot. I had no idea what to click, so just did my best not to click ALL the multi-choices (I think I still did once though?), but I am WUBBISH... XD

Anyhoo, your Near/Gevanni/Mikami was both cute and amazingly hot at the same time, and given I don't generally read the former characters, that's saying something.

Also, your fic in general got me through two hours in the gym on Friday. Just thought you ought to know. ^^

Hahaha, I will definitely add that grain of salt to things, then. XD And I hope it goes without saying that I love your work, too, regardless of what it's about. :P

I was thinking I should have made every question a radio button, to force people to make SERIOUSLY difficult choices, but it was probably obnoxious enough as it was, haha. XD

I... have issues with fic length, which is part of the reason I ask -- I mean, I have this serious inertia thing, where I don't want to pick up a long fic unless I'm confident it'll be good, and even if I have good reports on it, I tend to procrastinate. So the thing I'm most likely to read is a drabble, because I'm... fic-commitment-phobic? Wow, fml. XDDDDD

The world needs more DW fic. Seriously. Especially more gen. :|

Hahaha, I have no problem with disclaimers anyway. XD
